Western Union Money Transfer   - Receiving payment in India   Updated information on Western Union in India

Western Union is one the oldest and largest money transfer networks worldwide. The sender can make payment in cash and you can receive payment in cash within 15 minutes. The procedure for receiving payment through Western Union is as follows:

• After the sender has sent the money, the sender gets a 10 digit  code number called the money transfer control number (MTCN), which is sent to the receiver

• The receiver goes to the nearest agent location with the MTCN, sender contact details and proof of identity.

•  The agent verifies the contact details and if the details match those available at the Western Union terminal , releases payment in cash  or by cheque (for larger amounts)

For tracking status of transaction and agent location, you  call on  their toll free number : 1-600-44-1851( in  India). Though the procedure for receiving payments through Western Union are simple and the network is very reliable, before requesting payment  you will have to take the following into consideration

• Many countries, with low foreign exchange reserves ,do not allow citizens to send money through Western Union.

•  In India, you can receive money through Western Union only 12 times in a calendar year.

• The sender and receiver should be an individual .  If the sender has entered  their company name, the agent may  refuse to make payment to you. You will have to request the sender to modify the name

• In Mumbai, most of the agents are concentrated in South Mumbai and there very few agents in suburbs of  Mumbai with large populations. 

• Though Western Union has a large number of  agents, service varies from agent to agent, and one particular agent wanted to deduct all their office expenses from the amount received by us, after asking us sign a receipt for a larger amount .

• Many of the agents listed at their website do not have Western Union terminals. They will ask you to fill the form, fax it to their head office (which has a western union terminal) and wait for the head office to fax back a confirmation. This could take a long time and depends on whether all the fax machines are working properly!

• You can receive payment at Head Post Offices of Indian Post with terminals. It is advisable to contact them after 1100 hrs since all the money order, registered post and speed post work is completed by them and the computers are free for connecting with the Western Union network. Post offices are uniformly distributed in most areas.

•  The best service is given by agents who actually have a Western Union terminal and should take only 2 minutes (the time taken to verify the amount sent and sign on the form)

• It is advisable to receive all payments through a single agent, since you do not have to provide proof of identity every time.
